Gilbert R. "Gib" Damian, 79, of Dunkirk died Tuesday morning (Nov. 19, 2013) at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk.
He was born July 9, 1934 in Sheridan, the son of the late Lawrence and Theresa (Majka) Damian.
A lifelong resident of Dunkirk, Mr. Damian graduated from the Industrial High School in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War.
He was retired from Greater Buffalo Press and Cliffstar Corporation.
A parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Mr. Damian was a member of several social clubs. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting, and was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills. His greatest joy in life was just being a Grampa to his grandchildren.
Survivors include his son, David (Leigh) Damian of Dunkirk; two granddaughters, Kimberly Damian and Julie Damian; one grandson, Daniel Damian; one great-granddaughter, Madison Gotowka; one great-grandson, Kahlil Easley; four sisters, Joan Bielaszka, Evelyn Whalen, Lorraine Maslach and Patricia Kokocinski; and two brothers, Leon Damian and Robert Damian.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou (Sullivan) Damian, whom he married Oct. 4, 1958 and died on Aug. 9, 2007; a son, G. Barrett Damian, who passed away in 1988; one sister and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock in the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. The Rev. Dennis Riter will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Dunkirk Free Library, American Heart Association or a charity of one's choice.
