Nick Barlette won the 55-meter dash Saturday, at Fredonia State's Steele Hall, setting a new Dunkirk school record in the process.
"Barlette worked on his start all week and the last couple of weeks and it's finally paid off," Dunkirk head coach Kurt Warmbrodt said.
Barlette won the event in a time of 6.73 seconds, besting Brett Csont's record of 6.74, which was set in 2004.
"It's quite an accomplishment," Warmbrodt added. "Brett was very fast. That time that he broke took Csont to states. So hopefully Barlette can continue and go after that and keep moving forward."
Barlette also helped anchor the winning 4x200 relay team that crossed the finish line in a time of 1:39.3. Barlette was joined by Rashad Graham, Jose Morales and Miguel Alicea.
Graham was second in the 300 in a time of 39.1 seconds and third in the high jump with a height of 5-feet, 8-inches. Morales qualified for Sectionals in the 55 with his time of 7.14 seconds.
Also for the Marauders, Javier Soto placed third in the 600 in 1:32.2 and anchored the fifth-place 4x400 relay team, which crossed the finish line in 3:54.9. Joining Soto were Ray Tarnowski, Ethan Francis and Alec Tomaszewski.
For the Lady Marauders, the 4x400 relay team of Calan Pogorzelski, Savia Moreland, Faith Rivera and Emilee Hanlon second while setting a new school-record time of 4:34.44. Pogorzelski, Hailey Griewisch, Luisa Bonilla and Lisa Dunbar held the previous record of 4:41.22, which was set in 2011.
"Calan Pogorzelski helped set the record when she was younger," Warmbrodt said. "And she's on (the record breaking team) again. They all ran well as a team and that's what counts."
Rivera placed fifth in the high jump at 4-6.
The team returns to action at Buffalo State on Friday, at 4:30 p.m.
For the Fredonia boys, Matt Civilette placed first in the triple jump with a distance of 43-2 3/4. Civilette also took third in the long jump at 18-feet, 11 1/2-inches. John Dewey placed fifth in the high jump at 5-4.
Garrett Johnson rounded out the Hillbilly jumpers with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 38-6 1/4.
Gwen Stokes led the Lady Hillbillies with a second-place finish in the high jump by clearing 4-10. Stokes also took fifth in the 1,000 meter with a time of 3:30.
Devon Kowalewski took third in the triple jump with a leap of 32-1 3/4.
Emily Wan finished sixth in the 600 in a time of 1:57. Ally Cobb earned a seventh-place finish in the 600 at two minutes even.
Georgie Gens set a personal best in the long jump with a distance of 13-9 1/2.
