David S. Vercant, age 65, died unexpectedly Thursday evening, January 9, 2014, at his home in Fredonia, N.Y.
Dave was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., on September 4, 1948, the eldest son of Alfred L. Vercant and the late Esther M. (Aldrich) Vercant. He has lived in the area all of his life, graduating from Fredonia High School in 1966. He also attended Alfred State College before settling into a lifelong career in farming.
In his adult life, he was employed in the grape business as owner/operator of Crooked Brook Farms Inc., working land which had been farmed by his family for over 100 years. For a number of years, he was also employed by La Porte Farm Equipment and in the field department at Growers Cooperative Grape Juice Co. Inc., both in Westfield, N.Y. He was an active a member of the Farm Bureau, on the board of directors at Growers Coop and widely known across the local grape growing community.
Dave was a lifetime member of the NRA and a past member of the NSSA 44th NY Volunteers, a National Championship-winning musket team. He was also the New York State Outdoor Small Bore Position Champion in 1972 and 1973, once shooting back-to-back perfect scores of 400. He belonged to various Rifle Clubs throughout Chautauqua County.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed the outdoors, camping and hunting, NASCAR, a new-found love of cooking and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Lou (Lefferts) Vercant, whom he married August 3, 1968; two daughters, Kerrie (William) Vercant Underhill of Bolton, Mass., and Amy Vercant of Fredonia, N.Y.; his father, Alfred L. Vercant of Fredonia, N.Y.; three brothers, Richard (Sue) Vercant of Fredonia, N.Y., Michael (Deborah) Vercant of Cassadaga, N.Y., and Timothy (Dorothy) Vercant of Dunkirk, N.Y.; brother-in-law Robert (Patricia) Lefferts and sister-in-law Kathryn (Todd) Wickmarkm both of Fredonia, N.Y.; a step-grandson, Peter (Erin) Underhill of Worcester, Mass., and two great-grandchildren; two aunts and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Esther M. (Aldrich) Vercant; his in-laws Edward E. and Madalyn H. Lefferts; brother-in-law William D. Lefferts and many aunts and uncles.
Friends may call today from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the LARSON-TIMKO FUNERAL HOME, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, where funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. Private interment services at Webster Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.
