Daniel Cross is the son of Tracey Simmons and Gregory Cross and a senior at Fredonia High School. He has been awarded the principal's award every quarter of his high school career. In addition to taking advanced English all four years of school, Daniel has also taken six of the eight advanced placement courses Fredonia High School offers: statistics, physics, psychology, English literature and composition, U.S. history, and U.S. government. He loves science and math classes best because they tend to challenge him most. He is in the top 10 percent of his class and will graduate in June with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors.
Daniel participates in numerous extracurricular activities. He has been in two Fredonia musicals, "Godspell" his freshman year and "Fiddler on the Roof" his sophomore year. He has also been a part of the select Madrigal Choir for the last two years. Daniel takes pride in his other activities. A student council member, Daniel was class treasurer his freshman and sophomore years, an adviser and prom chairperson his junior year, and is currently senior class president. Daniel has held leadership positions in Key Club. In his sophomore year, he was publications officer and he has been president in his junior and senior years. Daniel has participated in the annual conference of Model United Nations held at Gannon University since his freshman year. His team won first place for best position paper and third place for best delegation. Since his sophomore year,Daniel has enjoyed participating in the Big Buddy program at Fredonia. Daniel is a member of the National Honor Society, and he has also been an editor of the school news magazine, "The Spectator."
During his last two summer breaks, Daniel has spent 6 weeks at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa., as a member of the Summer Academy of Mathematics and Science. The Summer Academy has introduced Daniel to physics, calculus, and engineering and taught him about some aspects of college life, since all participants stay in campus dorms for the summer.
Daniel enjoys travel. Daniel took an EF tour of Greece and Italy in his sophomore year. While there, he saw the Parthenon, the Pantheon, the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, and the Trevi Fountain. He also went to Boston his sophomore year and saw many of the local sites while on a "Duck Tour." In April, Daniel will take another EF tour of Europe, this time to Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, and Prague.
Daniel has applied to eight colleges, but will not hear back from them until March or April. He is not sure where he is going, but he knows that he will study either biomedical engineering or computer science.
