Tryout planned for Babe Ruth World Series team

The Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties Babe Ruth leagues are holding a tryout for the 16-18 year old Babe Ruth World Series host team that will be participating in the 2018 Babe Ruth World Series at Russell Diethrick Park in Jamestown this summer.

This year’s tournament will be the 18th hosted by Jamestown since 1980 and will run Aug. 4-11. The tournament will feature champions of eight regions: Ohio Valley, Pacific Northwest, Midwest Plains, Pacific Southwest, Southwest, Southeast, Middle Atlantic and New England; as well as a New York state champion and the host team. Mid County, Texas won the 2017 World Series in Ephrata, Washington.

The date for the tryout will be Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at Robert H. Jackson Elementary School in Frewsburg. Players should arrive at 12:30 p.m. for registration.

Any player born prior to May 1, 2002 and on or after Jan. 1, 1999 is eligible to try out. Players are required to bring their own equipment including, catcher’s gear if trying out for that position, as well as bats and gloves.

The team’s manager will be Jay Grann, who has coached Frewsburg’s high school team for the past 10 years, compiling a 168-67 record, including six Section VI championships and three Far West Regional titles. The Bears have appeared in the state Final Four three times under Grann.
