Dunkirk softball tops Silver Creek

SILVER CREEK — The Dunkirk Lady Marauders topped the Silver Creek Black Knights, 9-2, in a CCAA West 1 high school softball contest Friday afternoon.

Dunkirk (5-2, 2-0) got off to a fast start against Silver Creek (1-1, 1-1), plating two runs in the first inning and four runs in the third.

Coming two days after a big second inning propelled the Lady Marauders to a win over Falconer, Dunkirk coach Michelle Gilmour said Friday’s performance suggests a promising trend of big early innings for her team. “The fact that we were able to score runs early and keep the intensity level is wonderful to see … it makes me very, very pleased as a coach to be at that point this early in the season,” she said.

Monica Pokoj got the pitching win for Dunkirk, giving up just one hit, one walk and one hit batter while striking out seven. She also hit a double. Ashley Gotowka finished the game, pitching two innings and striking out two, allowing two hits and a hit batter. Kymi Nance was Dunkirk’s top hitter, with three hits, including a double, and three RBIs.

“I thought they played Dunkirk softball the entire time,” Gilmour said of her team. “They were aggressive hitting and baserunning. Defensively, they did a great job of making plays and making things happen.”

Julia Hill pitched a complete game for the Knights, allowing seven hits and walking no one while striking out four batters. Tessa Douglas had a double for Silver Creek.

“We were playing flat tonight, we didn’t react quickly to batted balls and made costly mistakes,” Silver Creek coach Stacie Bauer said. “It’s hard to dig yourself out of a hole that you created. Five errors is not good defense.”

Dunkirk plays at Southwestern on Monday, while Silver Creek hosts Chautauqua Lake. Both games will be CCAA West 1 contests.
