Glowniak, Ganey lead Dunkirk past Olean

OBSERVER Staff Report

The Dunkirk Marauders finished off the week on a three game winning streak after a 7-6 victory over Olean on Saturday in a non-league high school baseball matchup at Dunkirk High School.

Dunkirk (3-2, 2-0) recovered from an early 3-0 deficit with a six-run second inning, highlighted by a Jared Glowniak squeeze bunt and three bases-loaded walks. Dunkirk batted around the order in the inning, as Koty Leeper led off with a single and walked to drive in a run in his second at-bat.

After Olean tied the game up at 6-6 in the top of the fifth inning, Dunkirk took the lead right back on a two-out RBI single from Glowniak on the first pitch of the at-bat, up the middle to score Leeper. The hit was Glowniak’s second RBI of the game.

“Jared Glowniak had a big game at the plate,” said Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda. “He also played stellar defense at third base for us.”

Dunkirk tasked Nate Ganey with protecting a 7-6 lead, after he allowed the tying run to score in the fifth inning. This time, however, Ganey shut the door on Olean. Ganey pitched perfect innings in the sixth and seventh innings, closing out the game retiring the final seven batters he faced to earn the win.

“Nate Ganey did a great job for us on the mound,” said Jagoda. “He pitched with a lot of confidence.”

Dunkirk’s timely hitting and key pitching were also aided by great plate discipline and much improved defense. The Marauders drew 11 walks on the day, along with playing a much cleaner defensive game than in Tueday’s loss against Frewsburg.

“Walks are as good as hits,” said Jagoda. “We also played much better defense today than against Frewsburg.”

Dunkirk looks to add to its winning streak on Monday, when the Marauders head to Sinclairville to face off with the Cassadaga Valley Cougars.
