North Collins softball defeats Ellicottville

OBSERVER Staff Report

NORTH COLLINS — After getting only one hit in its last game, North Collins came out ready to hit on Wednesday. The North Collins Lady Eagles softball team defeated Ellicottville, 15-7, in a CCAA Div. 2 East regular season high school softball matchup Wednesday on the North Collins softball turf.

North Collins (5-2, 3-1) fell behind early, trailing 4-0 after the top of the first inning. The Lady Eagles got two back in the bottom half of the first, but trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the third frame, the Lady Eagles took the lead with a six-run inning.

Looking for insurance runs for starting pitcher Rebecca Cyrek, North Collins gave her insurance — and then some — adding seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. The game was called after six innings due to weather conditions.

“We were hitting the ball really well today,” said North Collins coach Jan Warren. “Especially after getting one hit in our last game, this was huge. We were hitting it all over the place.”

Cyrek was solid both on the mound and at the plate for North Collins. She pitched the entire game for the Lady Eagles, tallying five strikeouts while allowing four hits and two walks. At the plate, Cyrek was 2-4 with a run scored. Four players in the North Collins lineup had multi-hit days, with DeAnna Wilson, Alexa English and Brianna Krawczyk also having multiple hits, in addition to Cyrek.

“I was glad to get this game in, with the weather how it’s been,” said Warren. “It was even better to get the win.”

Next up for North Collins is a home matchup with league foe Franklinville on Friday. That game, according to Warren, will be “a big one.”
