Silver Creek baseball tops Southwestern, 5-2, at Packard Field

LAKEWOOD — Sam Mullen doubled and homered as Silver Creek beat Southwestern, 5-2, in a game at Packard Field called after six innings due to darkness.

The Black Knights led 1-0 in the second inning when the Trojans’ Brian Burns tied the game with a solo home run to left-center field.

Mullen answered with a two-run home run to center field in the third to give the lead back to Silver Creek. It was his first of the season, but coach Mike Janisch saw his athlete have the composure of a veteran.

“He hit home runs before in other leagues,” Janisch said of Mullen. “He was very happy at that point and time to hit the home run.”

The Black Knights added on in their half of the fifth as Jon Pulver led off with a single and went to third on Mullen’s double. Alex Bogosian was then hit by a pitch before Zach Rybak hit a sacrifice fly to score Pulver. With two outs, Tom Galfo singled through the right side, allowing Mullen and Bogosian to score.

The Trojans got a run back in the fifth as Mitchell Pascarella singled home Aidan Kennedy.

Rybak got the win for Silver Creek, allowing six hits while striking out three. Rybak’s ability to make a difference at the plate and on the mound is not the only reason why coach Janisch sees him as “versatile.”

“He has other versatilities, too, as a leader and a fine defensive player. His play is all-around good,” said Janisch.

Pascarella took the loss, striking out nine, before Cole Snyder struck out two in the sixth.

Spencer Harford, Pulver and Mullen each had two hits for the Black Knights while Pascarella had two hits for Southwestern.

Silver Creek will play in the Conewango Classic at Frewsburg. The Black Knights begin the tournament against Randolph at 12:30 p.m. The winner will face the winner of Frewsburg and Portville and the loser with face the loser of that match.
