Fredonia had another solid day at the County Tennis Doubles Championship at the Fredonia State courts Thursday afternoon. In the semifinals, Fredonia’s Max Kinkela and Jimmy Rush defeated their teammates Augusto Rodriguez and Trevor Napoli 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. In the other semifinal, the fourth seeded Morawski and Bates from Olean defeated Quinn Payne and Carson Heimburg, the top seeds from Panama, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

The final saw Morawski and Bates defeat Kinkela and Rush, 6-2, 6-3. In the playoff for third and fourth place, Rodriguez and Napoli defeated the No. 1 seeds Payne and Heimburg 7-5, 7-6.

“I am incredibly proud of this Fredonia boys team as we went into the doubles competition unseeded and defeated first, second and third seeds along the way,” Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston said. “Both doubles teams today did a fantastic job to end up in second and third place at counties. Rodriguez and Napoli only played one match together prior to this tournament and pulled off four out of five wins. Rush and Kinkela defeated the second seeds yesterday and finished their local season with 11 wins and only today’s loss in the final.”

Kinkela/Rush and Rodriguez/Napoli will compete at the Section VI Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
