Brocton baseball wins division title

BROCTON — The Brocton Bulldogs (11-0, 9-0) clinched the CCAA West 2 baseball title Friday with a defeat of Sherman that ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Hunter Rizzo pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs victory, allowing just four hits, striking out eight and walking two. He was also 1 for 2 at the plate with two runs scored. Teammate Charlie Rexford was 2 for 2 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Brocton’s Ronald Brown went 1 for 1 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Sherman’s Mike Beatman was 2 for 3 with a double.

“We wanted to clinch the division and make it ours and it’s just the first piece of the puzzle leading forward,” Brocton coach Ray Rosas said.

The coach noted that a tough non-league schedule in the last days of the regular season — with three games against Class C teams Silver Creek and Dunkirk — should help prepare the team for the playoffs.

“The kids understand it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. They are playing really good ball,” Rosas said.

The Bulldogs’ next game is Monday in Silver Creek.
