Goot and Mierzwa among top performers

The run of decent weather that started last week, and finally got high school sports teams outside and playing, continued this week … at least, for most of it. Bad weather on Thursday and Friday did cause some events to get called off, but enough happened early in the week that a Week in Review column is called for.

Male athlete of the week

Adam Goot, Cassadaga Valley

Goot pitched a one-hitter in the opening game of a doubleheader against Sherman on Wednesday. He struck out 11 and also hit a two-run RBI single in his team’s 6-0 victory. (An Honorable Mention to Silver Creek pitcher Zach Rybak, who gave up just two hits in a complete-game win over Chautauqua Lake on Wednesday.)

Female athlete of the week

Alison Mierzwa, Forestville

Mierzwa had five hits, including a home run, in her team’s 25-5 defeat of Brocton-Westfield on Wednesday. It wasn’t her only big day of the week: she bashed two home runs and drove in four runs on Monday in the Lady Hornets’ 9-1 defeat of Sherman.

Team of the week

Fredonia High School baseball

The Hillbillies and coach Vince Gullo are used to winning, with seven consecutive Section VI class titles. This past week, they flashed their strength and dominated their CCAA West 1 opposition, going 3-0 and hitting the covers off of baseballs as they did it.

The Hillbillies started the week with a 13-2 win over Maple Grove on Monday, then followed that up with a 15-2 defeat of Chautauqua Lake on Tuesday and an 18-0 victory over Falconer on Wednesday. That’s a lopsided run count of Fredonia 46, Opponents 4. The only thing that stopped Fredonia was Mother Nature: A contest at Silver Creek on Friday got called off due to the afternoon thunderstorms that ripped through the area. Despite that postponement, Fredonia is now 8-0 in the CCAA West 1 this season.

Quote of the week:

“They were able to find pretty much every hole on this field.” — Brocton-Westfield softball coach Julie Arnold on Wednesday in Forestville, talking about the Lady Hornets after her team allowed them to score 25 runs. Here’s a good example of the changing fortunes of high school softball: The Lady Bulldogs had themselves scored 21 runs the previous day in a win at Sherman.
