Blue Devils rally back for their fifth straight win, 4-3

HOOKSETT, N.H. — Fredonia rallied from a three-goal deficit Saturday for a 4-3 victory over the U. Mass.-Dartmouth Corsairs in the second semifinal of the 2018 Southern New Hampshire’s Manchester/PAL Stovepipe Tournament.

Down 3-0 after the first 10 1/2 minutes, the Blue Devils scored four answered goals to win their fifth straight game and improve to 6-1 this season.

Luke Rivera scored the game-winner at 14:20 of the third period, assisted by defensemen Jon Carlson and Tommy Martyn. It was Rivera’s sixth goal of the season and his first collegiate game-winner.

Ethan Kirbis, Ryan Dunn, and Charlie Manley scored earlier for Fredonia, while goaltender Anton Rosen righted himself after the slow start to finish with 24 saves.

The Blue Devils advanced to the tournament championship game vs. host Southern New Hampshire in The Ice Den at 4:40 p.m. Sunday.

The Corsairs (2-5), members of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, took the early lead, 1-0, on a goal by Jonathan Ruiz. Mason Nichols made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal a few minutes later before Brendan McDonough made it 3-0.

Kirbis netted his fourth goal of the season at 12:03 of the first period to cut the Corsair lead to 3-1. The power-play score was set up by Jimmy Morgan and Ryan Dunner.

Fredonia pressed the action in the early part of the second period, at one point outshooting UMD 10-2, but were unable to close the gap.

The Blue Devils outscored the Corsairs 3-0 in the third period. Dunn scored an unassisted goal at 1:23 of the third period, his first goal of the season. Manley then scored a power-play tally, his second goal of the season, to tie the game at 3-3 at 6:44 of the period. Rivera’s goal completed the comeback.

Southern New Hampshire defeated previously unbeaten UMass Boston, 2-1, in Saturday’s first semifinal game, led by goaltender Kurt Gutting with 54 saves.and goals by Chris Moquin and Charlie Davis. The Penmen improved to 5-3-1 while the Beacons fell to 7-1-0.

NOTES: The Blue Devils’ five-game winning streak is their second in the last three seasons but only the third since the 2009-10 season … Kirbis has scored a goal in three straight games and at least one point in six straight games … two former Blue Devils, Sean Leonard and Tommy DeFelice, were in the Corsair starting lineup … The Corsairs are members of the four-team Northeast 10, an NCAA Division II conference … UMass Boston belongs to the New England Hockey Conference and was ranked No. 7 in this week’s USCHO.com poll.
