Luke Rivera, a hockey player at Fredonia State University and founder of the stroke awareness hockey fundraising movement at SUNY Fredonia, presented a check in the amount of $11,000 to benefit the Kaleida Health Stroke Center at Gates Vascular Institute.

Rivera presented the donation to hospital administrators along with Elad Levy, MD, MBA, FACS, FAHA, director of stroke research, co-director of the Kaleida Health Stroke Center and cerebrovascular surgery and professor and chair of neurosurgery at UB, Robert N. Sawyer, Jr., M.D., FAHA, co-director of the Kaleida Health Stroke Center and David Janicke, MD, PhD, medical director, Buffalo General Medical Center Emergency Department.

Rivera was personally affected by stroke at the age of 15 when his mother, Dana, suffered a massive stroke leaving over half her body paralyzed from head to toe. Dana, seven years post stroke, has regained full mobility through intense rehabilitation.

Rivera’s hockey coach also suffered a stroke and was successfully treated at the Gates Vascular Institute. Rivera and his teammates have worked hard to generate awareness with the goal of giving back to the world-renowned program that helps save thousands of lives every year through stroke intervention
