Blue Devils allow two late goals, tie Brockport, 4-4

Fredonia allowed two goals in the final minutes Tuesday, tying Brockport 4-4 in overtime in SUNYAC men’s hockey at Steele Hall.

Ryan Romeo scored the equalizer with 33 seconds left in regulation after Jeremy Solat scored with 3:11 remaining. Brockport was skating with an extra attacker in each case.

The late scores erased a 4-2 Fredonia lead built on the strength of goals by Luke Rivera, Jon Carlson, Charlie Manley, and Jimmy Morgan, Jacob Haynes and Ryan Dunn had two assists each for the Blue Devils, who entered the week ranked No. 14 by D3Hockey.com and No. 15 by USCHO.com. Haynes was named Blue Devil Booster Club Player of the Game.

Eric Bogart made 38 saves in the Fredonia net. Matt Schneider made 32 stops for Brockport.

The tie left Fredonia with an 11-3-3 record, including 5-2-1 in the SUNYAC. Brockport is now 11-5-2 and 3-4-2.

Rivera opened the scoring at 14:08 of the first period with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Head-manning the puck out of the defensive end, he weaved through the middle of the ice and snapped a scoring shot from the high slot. Brockport grabbed the lead with goals by Pray and Ethan Solat in a span of three minutes midway through the second period. Solat’s came on a power play, one of eight power-play chances for the Golden Eagles.

Fredonia also look advantage of three straight Brockport penalties late the second period. Carlson evened the score at 2-2 with his first goal of the season, a slapshot from the top of the right faceoff circle. One minute later, Manley put the Blue Devils on top — and joined Carlson with goals by Fredonia defensemen — with a slapshot from just inside the blue line, his fourth goal of the season.

The Blue Devils took a 4-2 lead at 7:59 of the third period on Morgan’s fifth goal of the season, a wrister from the slot. Yet Brockport would not be denied. The Golden Eagles outshot the Blue Devils 19-5 in the third period.

Fredonia will look to shake off the disappointment of Tuesday’s tie when it entertains Buffalo State at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a trip to Buffalo State on Saturday, part of the Battle By The Lake series.
