Dunkirk girls bowling wins section title

CHEEKTOWAGA — The Dunkirk girls high school bowling team continued their fantastic season on Wednesday, winning a Section VI Class C title at Airport Lanes in Cheektowaga.

Dunkirk placed second overall at the event out of the 41 teams that participated in Section VI, only losing to large school champion Orchard Park throughout the day. Orchard Park’s final total was 5,959 while Dunkirk rolled 828-835-967-2,630 in the morning then 959-922-1,049-2,930 in the afternoon for a total of 5,560.

“We started off slow in the morning — the nerves got to all of us, me included,” said Dunkirk head coach Donna Kubera. But as the day went on, the girls just kept getting better. After the morning we were down by 112 pins. We were still down by 25 going into the last game and then my girls turn on the burners and bowled a new school record for the last game and series. I could not be more proud of how these ladies kept it together, finished strong and finished as they started, as a team.”

Dunkirk was led by Olivia Corbett (608-608-1,217), which was good for ninth overall at the event. Mariah Glowniak (534-588-1,122) and Hannah Ellman (531-565-1,096) also both bowl really well for the Lady Marauders as well.

Tayler Skelly substituted into the morning series and provided a spark, according to Kubera.

“She came into the match in the fifth frame of game three and marked every frame,” said Kubera. “It didn’t only boost our score, but the teams spirit.”

Also winning a section title was the Forestville girls in Class D, who finished with a 5,346 for the day, good for third overall within the small schools. Falconer finished second in Class D with a 5,011.

The Dunkirk Marauders will now head to the state tournament on Sunday, March 10 in Syracuse at AMF Strike ‘N’ Spare Lanes. Tickets will be $10. More information can be found at: www.nysphsaa.org/sports/bowling.
