OBSERVER Staff Report

Tonight, the Westfield Wolverines seniors — Colby Bills, Evan Hauser, David Kircher and Matt See — will be honored on Senior Night in the Westfield Academy gym. But it won’t be just Senior Night grabbing the attention of the Westfield crowd.

The Wolverines host Sherman tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Westfield Academy with a chance to claim the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West boys basketball title outright with a win. However, Westfield’s opponent, Sherman, will be no easy task.

The visiting Wildcats are the defending league champions and defeated Westfield, 62-53, in Sherman on Jan. 15. Leading scorers John Swabik (14 points per game) and Mike Beatman (11.4 points per game) will lead the Wildcats into Westfield tonight.

Hauser leads Westfield with 13.2 points per game, but has regularly had games well over that, including 26 points against Panama last Tuesday to set this game up for the Wolverines to clinch the division tonight. Westfield also has two other scorers averaging double figures in scoring on the season — Ryan Jafarjian at 10.8 points per game and Andrew Baribeau at an even 10 points per game.

Hauser said after Tuesday’s game that his team has been focused on hanging a banner in the Westfield Academy gym at the end of the season — and tonight is the chance to make that dream a reality.
