OBSERVER Staff Report

The Alabama Crimson Tide are thought of as one of the best — if not the best — college football programs in the country, as they consistently compete for the national championship and produce high-end NFL talent. Recently, Fredonia’s own Jake Skinner has caught notice of the football powerhouse. Skinner received an invite to a Spring Practice from Alabama’s offensive line coach via direct message on twitter.

“Jake went to the New York State Power 50 in Utica, which is for the best recruitable players in New York State,”

said Fredonia assistant coach Jordan Sherlock. “Honestly Alabama is a long shot, but they don’t just invite anyone out there. It was an invitation to their Spring Practice saying they’re looking for Tight End talent.”

Skinner has all of the measurables that would draw in the interest of any college recruiter. Skinner measures in as an athletic 6’4″ and 235lbs. This past season Skinner showed that he was able to catch, block and tackle.

“A lot of what college recruiters look for is a certain type of body build,” said Fredonia head coach Greg Sherlock. “Jake is athletic, can block and tackle for us. A lot has to do with what they think they can do with his measurables. We’re working a lot more with him this offseason, Jake has everything you want, especially at the tight end spot.”

When the big names are interested it means there is plenty of more interest too. Skinner is quickly becoming one of Fredonia’s most recruited players ever with the amount of interest he has gained from schools across the country.

“As of right now he’s the most highly recruited player Fredonia has had,” said coach Jordan Sherlock. “He has a bunch of more visits coming up. When the dead period is over there will be a parade of schools to Fredonia.”
