Southwestern nearly no-hits Westfield, 12-0

OBSERVER Staff Report

WESTFIELD — The Westfield Wolverines took the field for the first time this season in a non-league contest against Southwestern on Tuesday at Westfield Academy, but the Wolverines were outmatched, as Southwestern came out on top with a 12-0 win after five innings of play.

“It was a little cold for sure, but it was nice to get outside and see what we need to work on,” said Westfield coach Dan Martin.

Southwestern (1-0) gave the ball to Nate Johnson for the first game of the year and he couldn’t have looked much better. Johnson carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Westfield’s Matt See doubled to break up the no-hit bid with two outs. See was the only member of the Wolverines (0-1) to record a hit on Tuesday.

Johnson finished with five innings pitched, with nine strikeouts and only one hit allowed. At the plate for Southwestern, Mitch Pascarella went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, while Aiden Kennedy had a pair of hits as well, including a triple. Westfield’s Brock Schuster threw four innings for the Wolverines on Tuesday after missing a large portion of last season due to injury. He had two strikeouts, three walks and 11 hits allowed.

Westfield will have another chance to see the field in non-league action on Friday, when the Wolverines host Cassadaga Valley at 4:30 p.m.
