Hillbillies fall to Williamsville East

OBSERVER Staff Report

WILLIAMSVILLE — The Fredonia Hillbillies played a non-league contest with Williamsville East on Saturday afternoon and for the first four innings, it was a close contest. In the end, however, Williamsville East opened the floodgates and poured it on to come away with an 11-1 victory.

Williamsville East (3-0) scored first on an RBI single in the second inning, but Fredonia answered a half inning later. Nick Whitfield came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Gullo to tie the game at 1-1. Whitfield also started the game on the mound for Fredonia (1-2) and pitched a pair of shutout innings, with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Donovan Apthorp, William Schmitt and Troy Lanski also pitched for Fredonia. Alec Schrader had a pair of hits for the Hillbillies.

“It was a good game for four innings,” said Fredonia head coach Vince Gullo. “Williamsville East is one of the top teams in Western New York. … But we saw quite a few positives for us.”

Fredonia will now turn its attention to Monday’s league game against Chautauqua Lake, set to be played at the baseball field on Chestnut Street in Fredonia, weather permitting.
