Lady Hornets knock off Lady Bulldogs, 7-2

Forestville takes care of business

Brocton’s Megan Gloss gets a hit during Tuesday’s game in Brocton.

BROCTON — Kaitlyn Alguire had her best pitching performance of her career on Tuesday night as she was able to lead the Forestville Lady Hornets to a 7-2 victory over the Brocton Lady Bulldogs. Alguire recorded a record 15 strikeouts in a complete game effort, where her only two hits in the game that she gave up, both occurred in the seventh inning. “Kaitlyn pitched well and was in control the entire game,” said Forestville head coach Brianne Hazelton. “She recorded her career high in strikeouts at any level and had a no hitter going into the seventh. It was great to see her in control as she works hard year round.”

The Hornets got off to a quick start by getting three runs in the second inning. Phoebe Kingsfield started the rally with a single before stealing second base and advancing to third on an error. Alguire followed through with an RBI single. Rachael Goodrich reached base next with a single. After Brocton forced a groundout, an error that overthrew second base brought in both runners. “Our mental errors cost us today,” stated Brocton head coach Julie Arnold. “Forestville had some timely hits, but we gave them extra outs today. We were solid fielding yesterday, but it is disappointing that we could not follow through on a quick turnaround.”

During the middle innings, Alguire was locked in as she accumulated eight strikeouts in nine at bats. According to Arnold, “She threw the ball well today. She threw strikes and had a great game where we struggled to put the bat on the ball.”

Forestville (3-0, 3-1) gathered four more insurance runs in the sixth inning. Again, Kingsfield got the rally started with a double that was hit over the left fielders’ head. Alguire and Goodrich both came through with RBI singles respectively. Madison VanZile was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Seventh grader Aspen VanArsdale followed through with an RBI single. “So far we have been doing a good job of hitting the ball this year,” Hazelton added. “Our lineup has come through with clutch hits. We also did a great job on the bases by being aggressive and taking advantage of advancing when we had those opportunities.”

Brocton (2-1) continued to compete hard and came through with its first hit of the game with one out in the seventh. Cheyanna Rivera had a solid drive into left field. After a fielder’s choice and an error, Juli Smith blasted a triple into left center field that brought in two runs. “We showed a lot of character to fight back and compete until the end,” Arnold added. “Unfortunately, we put ourselves in a tough situation at that stage of the game.”

Forestville’s Kaitlyn Alguire winds up for a pitch during Tuesday’s CCAA Division 2 West matchup against Brocton.

The middle of the order consisting of Kingsfield, Alguire and Goodrich all had a multiple hit game with Kingsfield having the only extra base hit for the Hornets.

Smith had the biggest at bat of the day with a deep triple for the Bulldogs.

Megan Gloss pitched great in defeat, giving up seven runs (four earned) from eight hits while striking out six. Alguire gave up two runs (one earned) from two hits while striking out 15. Both pitchers did not surrender a single walk during the game.

“It was a great game from both sides,” stated Hazelton. “Brocton always does a good job and I am pleased with how we played together as a team today.”

Forestville looks to continue its great start when they travel to Bemus Point today, while Brocton looks to get back on track with a non league game against Falconer tomorrow.
