Former Westfield wrestler captures H.S. state championship in Oregon
WESTFIELD — Dyllan Houser, a former Westfield youth wrestler and WRCL wrestler, won the OSAA Class 2A/1A 182-pound state championship title on Saturday, February 23 in Portland, Oregon. Houser entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed after winning the 2A/1A Special District 3 Championship the week prior. He won his first round match 1-0 to advance to the second round against the No. 1 seed, where Houser pinned his opponent with 28 seconds left in the match to earn his finals appearance. Houser faced off with the No. 2 seed in the championship match. He didn’t let a 2-1 deficit going into the second period stop him from being the aggressor. Houser earned an escape point in that period to set up a tied third period. He then took the lead when a stalling call was made with 1:15 remaining. Houser stayed aggressive and scored a match-clinching takedown with 10 seconds left to win 5-2 over Cayden Kangiser, of Glide, Oregon. Houser, a senior at Rogue River High School, finished with a high school record of 101-38 after wrestling for WRCL (2015) and Cookeville, TN (2016-2018). He was a three-time state qualifier in Tennessee. Houser is Rogue River’s third state champion, the last one being 23 years ago. He plans on wrestling in college after graduation.
