WESTFIELD — The Westfield Lady Wolverines were down 10-0 after the top of the fourth inning against Sherman on Tuesday evening, but the girls in blue and white would not give up. In the end, the Lady Wolverines clawed all the way back to win, 12-11, in a CCAA Division 2 West softball game at Westfield Academy.

Westfield (3-8, 3-7) started the comeback with a nine-run bottom of the fourth inning, in which Sarah Tilley and Abbi Warner each had doubles. The Lady Wolverines scored five of the nine runs in the inning with two outs.

Aysia Burgess made what Westfield coach Wendy Dellow described as “an amazing catch,” in center field to keep Sherman off the board in the top of the fifth inning, then Casey Black came around to score in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 10-10.

The Lady Wolverines took the lead, 11-10, on a home run to deep left field by Haleigh Dellow. The Westfield eighth grader’s home run put Westfield ahead, but Keara Kincaid added a crucial insurance run for Westfield to lead 12-10. Sherman scored in the top of the seventh on a one-out RBI single by Amaya Lewczyk, but she was caught stealing for the second out of the inning and a groundout to shortstop finished off the win for the Lady Wolverines.

Rowan Fisher contributed a double for Sherman early in the game, along with pitching the first four innings. After the long inning in the bottom of the fourth, Lewczyk took over in the circle and ended up with the loss. Tanleigh Bestine pitched all seven innings for Westfield, striking out 11 batters.

Westfield has another league contest today, as the Lady Wolverines host Forestville.
