Course Record Tied At Shorewood In Korn Ferry Tour LECOM Challenge Qualifier

Kevin Kaszuba of Dunkirk places his ball for a putt on No. 10 during the Korn Ferry Tour LECOM Challenge Qualifier at Shorewood Country Club on Monday.

Out of a field of more than 100 golfers, just 12 shot rounds good enough to advance past Monday’s Korn Ferry Tour LECOM Challenge Qualifier at Shorewood Country Club.

In a repeat of last year’s finish, David Denlinger fired a 12-under-par 60 to tie a course record set last year by Willie Mack of Grand Blanc, Michigan and earn a spot at the LECOM Challenge at Peek’n Peak Resort this weekend. Denlinger, a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania carded 12 birdies to finish ahead of a five-way tie for second. Eric Cole, Matthew Hill, Chris Naegel, David Pastore and Jamison Sindelar all shot 65.

Turning in 66s to round out the final qualifiers were Shawn Warren, Isaiah Logue, Kevin Roy, Jared Wolfe, Harrison Endycott, Trey Valentine and Mj Daffue.

“As soon as the wind goes down and with the rain we had on Saturday, 60 is not something that surprised me,” said Shorewood cub champion Kevin Kaszuba, playing in his second LECOM Qualifier in three years. “We’ve said for three years that we hope they can get the standard 20-mile-an-hour wind. Shorewood’s defense is the wind.”

Kaszuba ended his day with a 2-over 74 in a tie for 96th.

Ryan Nord watches his tee shot at Shorewood Country Club on Monday. “The greens were rolling at a nice fast speed that we don’t see that often,” he said. “These kids are young so I’m just out here to represent the community, I’m not here to try and make it to the Peek. I’m very happy with my ball striking today, and the score under these conditions, I’ll take that any day.”

While Kaszuba played in his first qualifier in 2017, Monday marked the second in a row for Jamestown’s Ryan Nord.

Nord shot a 1-over-par 73 in 2018 and finished off Monday’s round with a 5-over-par 77.

“I had a certain number in mind, but I just didn’t have it today,” said Nord. “It’s tough out here every time. You have guys that are going really low all the time, but last year was a good help. I had a little less nerves this year, played a lot better, just didn’t get the score.”

Like Kaszuba, Nord noted that Shorewood did not offer much typical resistance in the way of wind.

After playing a practice round on Tuesday, Nord was happy to see that a few days of dry weather aided conditions.

“It’s not overly tough when the wind isn’t blowing because usually the wind blows pretty hard off the lake, but the greens are small,” he said. “If you hit a lot of greens, you get a lot of good looks. They were pretty quick, running well, but there definitely can be some low scores out here today for sure.”

Denlinger and the top 12 finishers will get under way at the Upper Course on Thursday. This year’s Korn Ferry Tour LECOM Challenge, which was recently renamed from the Web.com Tour, offers free admission to the public all four days.
