Black Knights beat Lady Red Dragons for first time, 3-1

OBSERVER Staff Report

The Silver Creek/Forestville Black Knights took down the Maple Grove Lady Red Dragons for the first time ever, winning by a score of 3-1. As is tradition between the two teams, the game was a war of attrition in the mid-field.

“It went as expected. It was a battle, back and forth most of the game, and most of it was played in the middle. Both teams had a few missed opportunities. It was tough. It has been for the last few years with them,” said Black Knights coach Kevin Rice.

The Black Knight’s Kylie Procknal got the scoring started early, tallying an unassisted marker in the ninth minute. Rice said this goal was pivotal in helping his team in the long run.

“We were fortunate to get something early on, which helped settle them in. When you get one early, you unclench a little bit. We were able to play a little looser. For the first seven or eight minutes, we looked kind of tight, but the early goal definitely loosened us up,” Rice said.

Silver Creek/Forestville would add another goal in the 26th minute, this one coming from Chloe Barret on a feed from Rachel Beadle. Maple Grove would answer just four minutes later, when Courtney Martin found twine with some help from Ana Pavlock.

Coming out of the half leading 2-1, the Black Knights put on the early pressure again, as Procknal put up another goal, extending the lead to 3-1, and filling the void left by Jayla Cossin’s absence in the game. Maple Grove didn’t back down.

“We went up 3-1 early in the half and I thought at some point the wind would come out of their sales, but they just kept coming at us,” Rice said.

Silver Creek/Forestville would hang on for the victory, thanks in part to Alina Beadle’s five saves in net for the Black Knights. Maple Grove’s Kasie Craig stopped eleven shots made on her.

In the first game of what Rice said was the “gauntlet” of his team’s schedule, he said beating Maple Grove is a huge moment for his team’s growth for the rest of the season.

“The next few games will tell us a lot about how we’ll go through the rest of the season. Having never beaten Maple Grove, this is huge for our psyche,” Rice said.

Silver Creek will take on Frewsburg at noon Saturday, Sept. 21, and then will move on to play Westfield on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m.
