Fredonia’s Burns sees first action of D1 football career

William Burns, of Fredonia, a redshirt freshman at Kent State is in the rotation at Nose Guard on the defensive line. William saw his first playing time against Arizona State in Tempe on Aug. 29. He got in for about a dozen plays against ASU in a 30-7 loss for Kent State. This past weekend he saw significantly more playing time against Kennesaw State and racked up three solo tackles and three assists in Kent’s 26-23 overtime victory.

Kent State is in the Mid American Conference, but has three tough out of conference opponents on this seasons schedule. In addition to Arizona State, next week they play at No. 8 Auburn and on Oct. 5 they travel to Madison to play Wisconsin.

Burns is on a mechanical engineering track major and after his freshman year is still maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He is the son of William (Bill) Burns and Marge Burns of Fredonia. He attended Fredonia schools through eighth grade and high school at Cathedral Prep, in Erie, PA. At Cathedral Prep, Burns made 46 tackles as a senior with 3.5 sacks. He was a member of back to back PIAA State Championship teams and was personally selected to the District 10 Big School All-Star Team. He was also a four-year honor roll member.
