Hillbillies fall 15-8

OBSERVER Staff Report

The Fredonia Hillbillies drop their first game of the season, falling 15-8 to the Allegany Limestone Gators on Friday night. The Billies had a 8-7 lead for a majority of the middle quarters, but it slipped away from them later on. A Nick Whitfield interception sealed the game for the Gators.

For coach Greg Sherlock, his offense may still be lacking an identity. “Our defense has been really good, we’re moving the ball into the red zone, we’re just not scoring. We’re trying to find an identity. We really don’t have an identity right now. Maybe we need to get more people involved on offense,” Sherlock said. The lone Fredonia touchdown was scored by Whitfield on a 20 yard touchdown run, which was followed by a two point conversion. Whitfield, despite the low completion percent, managed the game well.

“His completion percentage wasn’t very great, but we had more dropped balls than I’ve ever seen. We have sure handed receivers, they just couldn’t catch the ball tonight,” Sherlock said.

An adjustment Fredonia will attempt to make next week is sorting out the offensive line, who only feature one returner from last year, making them pretty green up front.

“It might just be a little complicated for them, that could be our issue. Maybe we need to simplify their assignments. I’m not sure if they’ve picked up those assignments,” Sherlock said.

In addition to the line, Sherlock said his team just needs to get a bit healthier, as the roster is already a little lighter just two weeks in to the season. Fredonia (1-1) will move on to play Cassadaga Valley/Falconer, at Cassadaga, next Saturday afternoon.
