Lady Wolverines beat Maple Grove

OBSERVER Staff Report

BEMUS POINT — Continuing their strong start to the season, the Westfield/Brocton Lady Wolverines snuck by the Maple Grove Red Dragons, 1-0, at Maple Grove. The Red Dragons bested the Lady Wolverines in all three of their meetings last season.

Katie Bodenmiller, coming off her hat trick in Thursday’s game against Dunkirk, put up the only tally of the evening on a free kick in the 39th minute of the first half. Angel Busch made five saves for Westfield/Brocton in net.

“It was evenly fought match with a lot of back and forth. Playing yesterday, we were a little tired near the end of the second half, they really started bringing it to us. But we caught a couple breaks and we were able to pull it out. That’s the first time we’ve been able to take them down in a while,” said Westfield/Brocton coach Neil Huber.

For Maple Grove, Kasie Craig stopped 10 out of 11 shots, only allowing the one goal to Bodenmiller. The Red Dragons came into this season with really high expectations, despite the numbers they’ve lost over the past couple seasons.

“They’ve graduated 15 in two years and they’re still competitive. That’s a great program. This division is going to be really tight,” Huber said.

The Lady Wolverines will take the field again at home on Tuesday, to take on Randolph.
