OBSERVER Staff Report

The Dunkirk Marauders came up just short in a CCAA West boys soccer matchup with Chautauqua Lake on Friday afternoon at Dunkirk High School.

Chautauqua Lake (4-5-1, 2-2-1) came out of the gates with an early goal, as Thunderbirds’ Devin Putney found the back of the net just shy of two minutes into the contest on an assist by Carson D’Anthony.

Dunkirk (3-7-0, 1-4-0) would not be discouraged, however, and came back with an early goal of its own. Josiah Cox scored at the 7-minute mark in the first half on an assist by Alex Sanchez to even the score at one goal apiece.

The Thunderbirds reclaimed the lead with a goal in the 25th minute, as D’Anthony pushed the ball over the line, assisted by Chautauqua Lake’s leading goal scorer Hunter Harris. The teams played a scoreless second half, solidifying the Chautauqua Lake victory.

Chautauqua Lake is back in action on Monday night against Fredonia at Fredonia State College at 7 p.m., while Dunkirk hosts league-leading Southwestern on Monday night at Dunkirk High School, also at 7 p.m.
