Wolverines down Thunderbirds 2-0, Black Knights top Golden Cougars

OBSERVER Staff Reports

WESTFIELD — Mother Nature was only able to slow down the Westfield/Brocton Wolverines on Friday afternoon, but the Wolverines would not be totally contained. An early goal by Jason Almeter put the Wolverines up early and they held the lead the entire way in a 2-0 victory over Chautauqua Lake in a non-league boys soccer game at the NorthLake soccer complex in Westfield on Friday. Westfield/Brocton improved to 6-0 after the win.

Almeter’s goal came in the fourth minute of the game, which was heavily impacted by the weather.

“Extremely high winds limited both teams,” said Westfield/Brocton coach Jared Winder. “We were fortunate to get a goal early.”

The Wolverines didn’t score again until the 78th minute of the contest, when Nathan Culbreth found the back of the net after a feed from Josh Barresi. Westfield/Brocton goalkeeper Michael Johnson made three saves in the victory.

“Chautauqua Lake played a quality game,” said Winder “They showed a lot of improvement from the last time we played.”

The Wolverines beat Chautauqua Lake 5-0 earlier this season.

Westfield/Brocton (6-0, 1-0) hosts Pine Valley/Gowanda on Monday, while Chautauqua Lake (2-2-1) hosts Ellicottville Saturday morning, before traveling to Olean on Monday.

Silver Creek/Forestville 3, Cassadaga Valley/Falconer 2

SINCLAIRVILLE — The Silver Creek/Forestville Black Knights also managed to beat a team for the second time this season on Friday, though this time around, Cassadaga Valley/Falconer made the contest much closer than the previous matchup. Still, the Black Knights emerged victorious, with a 3-2 non-league win over the Cassadaga Valley/Falconer Golden Cougars on Friday, at Cassadaga Valley High School.

Like the last time the two met, Silver Creek/Forestville (2-3, 0-1) tallied the first goal of the game from Darren Jimenez, who had four goals in the previous contest. The same goal scorers from the last matchup led the Black Knights once again this time around, as Giovanni Pacifici scored the second goal of the game and Spencer Harford netted the eventual game-winner from the top of the box into the upper left corner of the net.

“We worked extremely hard. We wanted it more,” said Black Knights coach Mark Bratcher.

Where this game differed from the last contest was on the side of the Golden Cougars. Cassadaga Valley/Falconer (2-3, 1-0) scored a pair of goals on Friday, aided by a lineup with more players available than in the previous contest. Silver Creek/Forestville goalkeeper Jeremy Wilcox made 14 saves on Friday to hold off the Golden Cougars to secure the win for the Black Knights.

“Coming off a few tough losses, this is a really nice opportunity for my team to rally together,” said Bratcher. “This was good for us heading into league play.”

The Black Knights host Frewsburg on Monday in a league contest, while the Golden Cougars play at Chautauqua Lake on Wednesday.
