Lady ‘Billies complete perfect season
OBSERVER Staff Report
MAYVILLE — The Fredonia Lady ‘Billies girls tennis team has become quite a dynasty in the local high school sports scene. Tuesday, the Lady ‘Billies capped off a third consecutive undefeated season in league play with a 3-2 win over Chautauqua Lake to end the league year at 10-0 as league champions.
Fredonia’s three singles players, Bernie Gens, Alicia Kluck and Selin Arnavut, did what they did all season long — dominate the competition. Gens won in first singles over Emily Bauer of Chautauqua Lake 6-1, 6-0. Kluck followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Logan Walczak of Chautauqua Lake, while Arnavut beat Elizabeth Marshaus 6-3, 6-0 to cap off the league title once again. All three players finish the season undefeated in back-to-back years, while Kluck and Arnavut have not lost a singles match in both league and non-league games throughout their entire high school careers.
Chautauqua Lake won both doubles matches on Tuesday, as Kira Erickson and Elise Riedesel defeated Marissa Burr and Victoria Miller of Fredonia 7-6, 6-3 in first doubles, while Abby Paulus and Naomi Fisher defeated Mia Gullo and Grace Crino 6-1, 6-2 in second doubles.
Next up for Fredonia are the Tennis County Championships, which will be played Oct. 9-11 at the Lakewood YMCA.
