Marauders fall to Trojans in final minutes of action

OBSERVER Staff Report

The Dunkirk Marauders lost a heartbreaker against the Southwestern Trojans at home on Monday night by a score of 2-1 in a CCAA West boys soccer game at Dunkirk High School.

After giving up a tough goal to Southwestern’s Drew Keppel at the 21 minute mark of the first half, the Marauders were able to keep Southwestern off the scoreboard until late in the game. Dunkirk started to press the field in the late stages of the game when Nicholas Hayes scored the game tying goal with eight minutes left in the game. Southwestern was awarded a direct kick with just over two minutes to play in regulation from just outside of Dunkirk’s goal box where McKay Young was able to bury a great shot in the top corner to give Southwestern the victory.

Ashton Witkowski was stellar in net, making 19 saves for Dunkirk. Adam Sanchez and Bryson Travis continued their strong play on Dunkirk’s backline.

The Marauders (2-8, 1-5) are back in action on Friday night against Fredonia at 7 p.m. under the lights of Fredonia State University.
