Fredonia indoor track opens year with solid team performance

The Fredonia Hillbillies boys indoor track and field team had an impressive showing to open the season at the Fredonia State Invitational on Friday night. The Hillbillies posted top four finishes in seven different events.

Senior Hessen Bahgat was a double winner as he won the pole vault with a personal best indoor height of 12′ 3” and the high jump at 5′ 8″. Junior Jack Carlson ran away from the rest of the field in the 1600 meter run and crossed the finish line first with a time of 4:57.16. Other top performances included second places by Kyle Mikula in the shot put with a heave of 42′ 4” and Oliver Madariaga in the 300 meter dash with a time of 39.46. Rian Budzinski placed third in the long jump (18′ 5″) and the 4 x 200 meter relay team of Andrew Camp, Brenden Nero, Madariaga and Budzinski came in fourth with a time of 1:49.46.

“Several athletes qualified for the Sectionals in just our first meet,” noted Fredonia coach Mark Benton. “As a team, everyone competed at a high level.”

Fredonia will travel to Buffalo State this Saturday, Dec. 14 for another competition against several different schools. The first event is scheduled to begin at 8 am.
