West, heavy press lead Forestville to win over Gowanda
OBSERVER Staff Report
GOWANDA — The Forestville Hornets defense was buzzing all night long on Tuesday, as the Hornets came away with a 61-51 victory over the Gowanda Panthers in a boys basketball contest at Gowanda High School.
After jumping out to a three-point lead after the first quarter, Forestville (2-3) got out and ran in the second quarter thanks to heavy defensive pressure in a press, leading to plenty of points in transition. The Hornets finished with over 20 steals as a team in the game.
“We did an effective job with our press,” said Forestville coach Jon Feniello. “Our defense steals led to a lot of points in transition.”
Forestville outscored Gowanda 21-6 in the second quarter for a 31-13 halftime lead. The score was 49-27 after three quarters, before a 24-12 fourth quarter in favor of Gowanda.
Three different Hornets had six steals apiece on Tuesday: Gage Davis, Michael Palmer and Javier West. West led all scorers in the game with 21 points, along with 12 rebounds. Gavin Christian also had a strong game offensively with 18 points, while Davis also had five assists and Dalton Hastings had 10 rebounds. Tyee Nagel and John Ondus led Gowanda with 15 points apiece.
Forestville also won the JV contest on Tuesday, 53-44.
Forestville’s next contest will be at Jamestown Community College against Sherman over winter break.
