Devils hockey upsets No. 11 Stevenson 4-3

REISERTOWN, Md. — Fredonia State freshman Gregg Lee’s first collegiate goal will be one he won’t soon forget.

Skating down the left wing on a power-play. Lee scored on a rebound of a shot by Victor Tracy just 38 seconds into overtime as the Blue Devils upset No. 11 Stevenson at the Reisertown Sportsplex.

Jacob Haynes, Tanner Kahlau, and Tommy Martyn also scored for the Blue Devils, who rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1.

First-period goals by Christian Ripley and Nick Gray staked the Mustangs to a 2-0 lead. Ripley later added a second goal, and his 14th of the season, but it couldn’t keep the Blue Devils from mounting some scoring of their own.

Down 2-0, the Blue Devils cut their deficit in half on a shot from the right face-off circle by Haynes at 4:15 of the second period. Jasper Korican-Barlay had the primary assist with a cross-ice pass from the opposite wing. It was Haynes’s team-leading seventh goal of the season. Charlie Manley was also credited with an assist.

After Ripley staked the Mustangs with a 3-1 lead early in the third period, Kahlau and Martyn answered with a pair of goals in a span of just under four minutes. Kahlau’s goal, his second of the season, came after he took a breakout pass from Manley in the defensive end, skated along the right boards, and pushed in a back-hander with a defender on his flank. A point-to-point pass from Hugo Gamache set up Martyn for a slapshot from the left point through a screen. It was also his second goal of the season.

Lee’s game-winner in overtime lifted the Blue Devils to 4-8-4. In addition to the assist by Tracy, Korican-Barlay was credited with the secondary assist.

Making his second straight start in net, sophomore Ryan Pascarella made 28 saves. Several were difficult stops. At the other end, Stevenson’s Ryan Kenny had 29 saves.

The teams are back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Reisertown Sportsplex. It’ll mark Fredonia State’s final non-conference game of the regular season.

Friday’s loss dropped Stevenson to 12-4-0
