Lady ‘Billies return from layoff with victory over Lady Gators

The Fredonia Lady ‘Billies got back on track on Friday with a CCAA West 1 girls basketball league victory over Allegany-Limestone by a score of 46-31 on Friday night at Fredonia High School.

Fredonia (7-5, 3-3) came out strong with 21 points in the first quarter and continued to show improvement from recent games on both sides of the ball. The Lady ‘Billies came in on a three-game losing streak in league play, but the last game, a 62-39 loss at Southwestern eight days prior to Friday’s contest.

“We had a week off to regroup, and I thought our mindset was good and our defense was a lot better,” said Fredonia coach Dan Vona.

Anna Buchanan led Fredonia with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the victory on Friday. Samantha Tabone helped out with 11 points, while Nagely Vazquez added to Buchanan’s presence in the paint with eight points and 10 rebounds of her own. Kazlin Beers ran the offense most of the night at point guard and finished with seven assists.

Fredonia has another week off before traveling to Olean next Friday night in another league game. The day after that, the Lady ‘Billies will play on the SUNY Fredonia court at Dods Hall against Cassadaga Valley.

Panama 63, Westfield/Brocton 32

PANAMA — Kylie Schnars’ 20 points led Panama in a 63-32 Division 2 West victory over Westfield/Brocton.

The Panthers (9-1, 4-0) used a 21-5 first quarter to take control of the game early and led 33-16 at halftime.

Mandy Brink added 15 points, knocking down two 3-pointers, while Natalie Angeletti finished with 12 points and seven assists for Panama.

The Wolverines (4-9, 0-4) were led by 12 points from Juli Smith, who drained a game-high three 3s.
