Potsdam drops Devils, 76-61

The Fredonia State women’s basketball team dropped a 76-61 game to Potsdam on Friday. Sophomore Katie Pitcher poured in 21 points and had a team-high six rebounds, and Morgan Davis added 10 points. Anna Chiacchia had nine points, five assists and four steals, and Lauren Mickley had nine points.

Potsdam was led by Caroline LaFountain, one of five players in double digits. Devyn Elliot and Jakia Howard both had a double-double for the Bears. Elliot went for 13 and 13, while Howard had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Potsdam led the entire first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Davis and Chiacchia had back-to-back layups to give Fredonia State its first lead of the game, 19-18.

The Devils would lead for most of the second, but could not take control of the game with their biggest lead being five points. The teams ended the half tied at 37.

Potsdam outscored the Devils 21-11 in the third.

With the Devils leading 43-41, Potsdam had a 17-3 run that gave them a 12-point lead. A free throw by Dyamon Hunter put the Bears up 58-46 with just under two-and-a-half minutes left in the third.

Potsdam outscored Fredonia by five points, 18-13, in the final frame.

After shooting 10-of-18 from beyond the arc last game, the Devils converted only one in 14 attempts. Potsdam nailed seven threes, and for the game shot 41 percent from the floor while Fredonia State hit on 37 percent of its shots.

Fredonia State falls to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the SUNYAC, and Potsdam advances to 5-7 and 2-5.

The women take on Plattsburgh tomorrow afternoon in the second part of a weekend home stand. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
