Silver Creek tops Salamanca; Forestville wins at home

SALAMANCA — The Silver Creek Black Knights (7-4, 4-0) had five players score double digits on the road to secure a 67-62 win, on the road against the Salamanca Warriors (8-4, 2-2) in a Section VI CCAA Division 1 East boys basketball game, Friday night.

The Black Knights and the Warriors were neck and neck all the way, tied at 52-52 headed into the fourth quarter. Silver Creek hit some big shots down the stretch in the fourth quarter to secure the 67-62 league win on the road.

“We wanted to pressure them, we ran our normal stuff,” stated Silver Creek head coach Ralph Jackson. “They have several good players on their team.”

Silver Creek had five players score double digits in a balanced attack, while Jarod White had 30 points and 11 rebounds for Salamanca.

“It wasn’t our plan to let White score that many on us, fortunately we finished the game strong,” stated Coach Jackson.

Jeremy Wilcox highlighted the Black Knights with a double-double, getting 11 points and 10 rebounds, Sam Braidich had 14 points and seven rebounds, Dom Jamison had 13 points and five assists, Spencer Harford had 10 points and eight rebounds and Andre Rosario added 10 points.

The Black Knights are back in action on Tuesday at Dunkirk.

Forestville 70, Catt./Little Valley 33

FORESTVILLE — The Forestville Hornets (5-6, 3-1) boys basketball team demolished Catt-Little Valley, 70-33, in a Section VI CCAA Division 1 East boys basketball game at Forestville High School.

The Hornets came out flying against the visiting Timberwolves, outscoring them 45-8 in the first half. Forestville continued to bury Catt-Little Valley (3-11, 0-4) in the second half on the way to a 70-33 league win.

“Our defense has been playing really well,” stated Forestville head coach Jon Feniello. “Our press opened a lot of opportunities for us. We played really well together as a team.”

The Hornets were led offensively by Javier West with 20 points, seven steals and seven rebounds; Gavin Christian scored 15 and Dalton Hastings added 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Marcus Volk was the leading scorer for the Timberwolves with eight points.

Forestville is back in action on Wednesday when they host Brocton.

Westfield 64, Sherman 62

SHERMAN – Westfield remained unbeaten. Barely.

Michael Johnson scored 16 points and had eight rebounds, and Andrew Baribeau added 15 points and nine boards to lead a balanced attack as the Wolverines edged Sherman, 64-62, in a Division 2 West basketball game Friday night.

Westfield (11-0, 7-0) led 31-17 at halftime and 50-34 after three quarters, but the Wildcats (5-4, 4-2) made it very interesting as they outscored the Wolverines, 28-14, in the final period.

“We came out and hit a couple shots early to get the deficit down,” Sherman coach Cory Emory said. “It was a great effort, great comback and a great game to be part of.”

The Wolverines led, 58-55, with a minute left, but the Wildcats scored a field goal with two seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 63-62. Sherman was forced to foul, Westfield hit one free throw and the Wildcats didn’t get a good shot off at the buzzer.

Nathan Culbreth chipped in nine rebounds and six assists the Wolverines.

Justice Hannold led Sherman with 21 points and four steals; John Swabik added 8 points, six rebounds and five assists; and Gerald Carris had 16 points and three steals.

North Collins 65, Franklinville 55

NORTH COLLINS — The North Collins Eagles continue their hot streak in league play, this time topping the Franklinville Panthers 65-55 on Friday night.

Despite getting outscored in the first quarter 21-18, the Eagles rebounded well, outscoring Franklinville 16-9 in the second quarter to take the lead heading into halftime. The halftime lead would stand for the remainder of the game.

Despite some early foul trouble, Tyler Robinson scored 24 points and added 10 rebounds for the Eagles, continuing his excellent run in his senior season.

“He had four fouls, he scared me for a while. I thought we were going to lose him,” said North Collins coach Jan Warren. “But he chilled out a little bit. He’s been playing so well for us.”

Matt Sweet added 13 points and four assists for the Eagles, while Chris Smith had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Franklinville was led by Logan Frank with 19 points, while Blake Frank had 16 points.

The Eagles (5-7, 3-1) are next in action against the Ellicottville Eagles on Friday, Jan. 24 in Ellicottville.

Allegany-Limestone 72, Dunkirk 35

ALLEGANY — The Dunkirk Marauders (4-9, 1-4) boys basketball team dropped its fourth consecutive game of the season to Allegany-Limestone, 72-55, in a Section VI CCAA Division 1 West boys basketball game at Allegany-Limestone High School, on Friday.

The Gators (10-2, 5-0) stayed undefeated in Division 1 West league play with the lopsided win over the Marauders. The scoring effort was powered by 40 points coming from just two players. Casey Curran had 22 and Gus Napoleon had 18.

Allegany-Limestone has a nonleague away game at Hutch-Tech today, but is back in league action on Thursday when they get a rematch against Fredonia at Fredonia High School. The Hillbillies currently sit in second place of the division while the Gators are in first.

Dunkirk will try to get its season back on track on Tuesday night when they play Silver Creek in a nonleague game at home.

Maple Grove 91, Cassadaga Valley 46

SINCLAIRVILLE — Maple Grove led 27-10 after the first quarter and 54-23 at halftime en route to a 91-46 Division 2 West win over Cassadaga Valley.

Tyler McPherson led the Red Dragons (4-4, 3-3) with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists while Ayden Reagle had 14 points and four assists. Cade Egan had 13 points and four rebounds, and Peter Auer had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Drake Pierce led the Cougars (2-10, 0-6) with 9 points and seven rebounds while Noah Abram had 8 points and six rebounds.

Ellicottville 67, Pine Valley 52

SOUTH DAYTON — The Pine Valley Panthers fell to the Ellicottville Eagles 67-52 on Friday night, with the turning point of the game being the second quarter. With the Panthers already trailing 19-13 heading into the second quarter, the Eagles soared through the quarter, outscoring the Panthers 26-10 in the frame, fiving them a 45-23 lead heading into half time. The Panthers were able to make a run at it in the fourth quarter but could never quite close the defecit.

Wayne Libby led the Panthers (4-7, 0-4) with 15 points, while Dawson Harrington added 11 points and six rebounds. Bryce Sercu had 11 points, and Cam Hayes had four points, six rebounds, and six blocks for the Panthers in the loss.

Ellicottville (10-2, 4-0) were led by Logan Grinols, who had 17 points and six steals, followed by Wyatt Chudy’s 10 points and eight rebounds. Clayton Rowland added nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the Eagles.

Pine Valley is next in action against Cassadaga Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 21, while the Eagles will take on the North Collins Eagles on Friday Jan. 24.

Frewsburg 83, Brocton 32

BROCTON – Brad Nelson recorded 26 points as Frewsburg defeated Brocton, 83-32, in Chautauqua Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West action.

The Bears (9-3, 3-2 CCA-2 West) opened the game with a 21-8 first quarter and held a 44-14 lead at halftime. Frewsburg also received contributions from Aaron Hair and Zack Carr as each chipped in 12 points.

Seniors Gabe Morello and Michael Steward each drained three 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (3-9, 1-5 CCAA-2 West) and each added 11 points in the loss.
