UTICA — The 2020 Fredonia State women’s lacrosse season opened Saturday with a 15-5 loss to Albright College.

Allison Coon had three goals and an assist, and Alyssa Kissel had two goals for the Blue Devils, who’ll take on host SUNY Poly at 2 o’clock Sunday. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Carr had 10 saves. She made several tough stops early before Albright got its offense going. The Lions, out of Reading, Pa., were led by Kelly Baumann with five goals and two assists

The Blue Devils led only once, at 1-0 lead on a goal by Coon. Albright scored twice over the next eight minutes to take a 2-1 lead before a penalty against the Blue Devils resulted in a Albright player-up goal and a 3-1 lead. With 8:26 left in the first half, Kissel scored for Fredonia State to make it a 3-2 game. Albright took command with a 4-0 run before halftime. Three of those goals came in the final 6:32 – last two in the final minute.

Albright put the game out of reach by scoring the first five goals of the second half. Coon’s second goal with 16:04 left put an end to what had become a 9-0 Albright run.

The Blue Devils won the first seven draws of the game and outdrew Albright 15-7 overall. Bri Emery had six of those draws. Fredonia State’s other field stat leaders were Carr with four ground balls, and Julie Culver with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
