Devils open season 2-2 after Saturday split

ROANOKE — Fredonia State earned a weekend split of its four-game series at Mountain Mash with a win and a loss on Saturday. A 13-5 win in six innings over Pitt.-Bradford was followed by a 2-1 loss to Susquehanna. The Blue Devils (2-2) lost to host Roanoke and defeat Pitt.-Bradford on Friday.

Nicole Kumro led the Game 1 offense vs. UPB with 4 for 4, including two doubles, and one RBI. She led off a seven-run third inning with a single and doubled later in the inning.

Other top offensive production came from Emily Chelius with a double and two singles, Katie Yudin with a double and a single, and Amber Piniewski with a triple. Yudin picked up the pitching win with three innings of relief of Chelius, who was making her first collegiate start in the circle.

In the getaway game, the Blue Devils scored their only run in the first inning. Delana Thomas led off the game with a single. She was later erased on a fielder’s choice. After a groundout put a runner on second, Eva FitzSimmons delivered a two-out RBI single. Thomas had a single later in the game. She was the only Blue Devil with more than one hit.

Susquehanna countered with two runs in the second inning. That marred an otherwise solid pitching performance by Sam Seegar. She struck out seven, walked four, allowed just four hits, and retired the last seven batters she faced.
