FREDONIA — Fredonia (9-1-3, 9-2-1) scored four unanswered goals to claim a 4-1 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association West Division boys soccer win over Southwestern (8-4-1, 8-3-1) on Friday.

With that win the Hillbillies claim a No. 2 seed in the Section VI Class B-2 playoffs, and will host a playoff game on Tuesday at Silver Creek against a to-be-determined opponent.

McKay Young opened the scoring for the Trojans in the fourth minute, but Southwestern was unable to hold off the Fredonia attack after that.

“Coming in we knew it was going to be a tough game. They played hard and so did we,” Fredonia coach Jim Rush said.

Juan Matias tallied in the fifth minute from Sal Tabone, and Tabone gave Fredonia the lead with a goal of his own in the 17th minute. Ronan Murphy was credited with Fredonia’s third goal of the night on an own-goal by Southwestern, and Tabone fed Jack Carlson to make it 4-1.

“They got on the board early, but we showed some poise, and to be able to score a minute later like that just showed our ability to bounce back,” Rush said.

Trevor Persch made five saves for the Hillbillies.

T’BIRDS PREVAIL

MAYVILLE — Chautauqua Lake scored the final three goals to knock off Maple Grove, 3-2, in a CCAA Central Division game.

“It’s nice for us going into the playoffs,” Thunderbirds coach Mike Putney said, “and a big push for us. Maple Grove is a great program. You can only get better playing a team like that. I look forward to, hopefully, making a run. You never know what’s going to happen.”

The Red Dragons (9-1-1) led 2-0, thanks to a pair of goals by Eli Moore on assists from Nick Golando and Tristan Spillane respectively, but Chautauqua Lake trimmed the lead to 2-1 when Hunter Harris found the back of the net, assisted by Elias Quintero, at the 35th minute.

In the second half, Carson D’Anthony converted a penalty kick at the 62nd minute and Harris scored again, assisted by Devin Putney for what proved to be the game winner.

Tate Olson made six saves for the Thunderbirds.

“Going against an undefeated team, it’s never an easy task,” Coach Putney said. “They’re undefeated for a reason. It’s a good rivalry.”

RAIDERS EDGE GOLDEN COUGARS

Andrell Leeper lifted Jamestown (2-9-1, 1-9-1) to a 2-1 win over Falconer/Cassadaga Valley (3-9, 3-8) on Friday at Bill Race Field in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association West Division action.

Leeper tallied twice, the first coming from Carson Bane with two minutes to play in the first half, and another midway through the second period from Noah Burch.

Braeden Sigular scored from Adam Dossey in the 11th minute for the Golden Cougars, and Carson Olson made seven saves.

Jon Brito stopped five shots for the Red Raiders.

EAGLES FALL

PORTVILLE — Michael Cole scored all three goals, leading host Portville (7-2, 7-1) to a 3-0 win over Ellicottville (8-4-1, 6-1-1) in CCAA East play.

Nick Harmon and Christian Gariepy picked up assists in the win.
