Fredonia advances to semifinals, downs Newfane

SILVER CREEK — Playoff nerves.

That, according to Fredonia boys soccer coach Jim Rush, was the issue his team was dealing with in the first half of Tuesday’s Section VI Class B-2 quarterfinal.

“We gave up a goal on a corner kick (to trail 1-0), but I told the guys at halftime that we had plenty of time,” he said. “We had opportunities, we just didn’t finish.”

Finish the Hillbillies did after the break.

Juan Matias scored two goals and Adam Sellari added the other to spark No. 2 Fredonia to a 3-1 victory over No. 7 Newfane. The win vaults the Hillbillies (10-1-3) into Thursday’s 5 p.m. semifinal against No. 3 Southwestern back at Silver Creek.

Michael Berg, Dawson Bird and Ronan Murphy each added an assist in support of keeper Trevor Persch, who made six saves.

“We responded in the second half,” Rush said. “There was no sense of panic.”

The Hillbillies swept the regular-season series against Southwestern, 1-0 and 4-1.

“We know coming into Thursday’s game, we’ll have to play a full 80 minutes,” Rush said.

TROJANS TRIM AKRON

No. 3 Southwestern was a 3-1 winner over No. 6 Akron in Class B-2 quarterfinal action.

Max Vaughn scored twice, converting on passes by McKay Young in the ninth minute and the 27th minute.

Simon Pirrello added another tally for the Trojans in the 71st minute.

Southwestern will travel to meet No. 2 Fredonia at 5 p.m. on Thursday. That game will be played at Silver Creek Central School.

GATORS POST SHUTOUT

Top-seeded Allegany-Limestone was a 3-0 winner over No. 8 Wilson in another Class B2 quarterfinal.

The Gators will host No. 4 Roy-Hart at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

T’BIRDS RALLY

RANDOLPH — After trailing by a goal early, No. 5 Chautauqua Lake (6-3) was able to rally with three unanswered tallies, topping No. 4 Randolph (4-4-1), 3-1, in Class C quarterfinal action.

Bryson Rozler banged home a header for the Cardinals on a corner kick in the 22nd minute, but the Thunderbirds found their offense late.

In the 56th minute, Carson D’Anthony converted on a pass by Nate Engdahl to even things up.

With three minutes left to play, D’Anthony took a big cut on a bouncing ball that was fired home to give Chautauqua Lake a 2-1 advantage.

“An absolute laser,” head coach Mike Putney said of the shot. “He took it off a bounce and it just was a rocket. Goalie was on the left side and he put it upper left side. Just beautiful”

The Thunderbirds added their third goal a minute later when Jackson Janicki found Elias Quintero for a finish.

“They got on the board quick, but we are a really resilient team,” Putney said. “No matter what we are going to play until the final whistle. They just don’t let up.

Tate Olson stopped four shots for Chautauqua Lake, which will travel to meet No. 1 Portville at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
