Playoffs begin with Wolverines victory
Section VI released its soccer postseason brackets Saturday and Westfield/Brocton wasted no time advancing Sunday afternoon.
The eighth-seeded Wolverines beat No. 9 Maple Grove, 3-0, in a Class C girls prequarterfinal behind a 10-save shutout by keeper Angel Busch. Jacqulyn Ward scored the first two goals from Westfield/Brocton, off assists from Haleigh Dellow and Carly Wilson, before Makena Barresi tallied from Makartnee Mortimer.
Next up for Westfield/Brocton will be a quarterfinal date with No. 1 Ellicottville today at 5 p.m. Other quarterfinals in Class C include No. 7 Randolph vs. No. 2 Frewsburg at Strider Field in Jamestown, No. 5 Chautauqua Lake at No. 4 Holland and No. 6 Salamanca at No. 3 Portville.
Also in Class B-2 girls action today, No. 4 Fredonia will take on No. 5 Eden in Silver Creek. The winner will take on No. 2 Southwestern in a semifinal Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Boys quarterfinals will get underway Tuesday with No. 3 Maple Grove hosting No. 6 Westfield/Brocton and No. 4 Randolph hosting No. 5 Chautauqua Lake in Class C. No. 1 Portville and No. 2 Ellicottville will await quarterfinal winners Thursday in semifinals.
In Class B-2 on Tuesday, No. 1 Allegany-Limestone will host No. 8 Wilson, No. 2 Fredonia will take on No. 7 Newfane in Silver Creek, No. 3 Southwestern will host No. 6 Akron and No. 5 Royalton-Hartland will travel to No. 4 Alden.
Other top seeds in the girls bracket include Clarence in Class AA, Grand Island in Class A-1, Lewiston-Porter in Class A-2 and East Aurora in Class B-1.
On the boys side, No. 1 seeds include Williamsville North in Class AA, Williamsville East in Class A-1, Williamsville South in Class A-2 and East Aurora in Class B-1.
Only teams that finished with at least a .500 record qualified for the postseason this year. Girls finals are scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. with boys finals set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. All games will be played at higher seeds unless other arrangements are made.
