Fredonia can’t find enough offense against Olean

When you think of Olean basketball you think of pressure defense and that is exactly what was on display Tuesday night in Fredonia.

The Huskies (4-1) handed the Hillbillies (1-3) a 52-33 defeat.

The pressure defense was just too much for the Hillbillies to overcome.

Fredonia did not record its first field goal until there was 5:20 left in the second quarter when Maddy Marsh scored off a rebound.

Marsh ended up with 5 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The bucket did lead to a bit of a run for Fredonia, which scored 12 points over the next five minutes. The spurt was led by Samantha Tabone, who hit two 3-pointers and finished with 7 points in the game.

Sarah Davis also scored 7 of her own and while going an impressive 3 for 4 from the free throw line. Kyleigh Waterman came off the bench to add 6 points for the Hillbillies.

“I am real proud of the girls,” Fredonia coach Dan Vona said. “I can’t wait for practice tomorrow. I truly enjoy working with these girls and helping them get better at basketball.”

Vona also made reference to the job sophomore Nino Morales did at the end of the game creating some good scoring chances for her and her teammates.

“Girls like Morales are the future of this program and we have to get her more playing time.”

Eight of nine players scored for Olean, led by Norah Sweitzer with 16 points. Anayah Parks Ball chipped in 11 and Chrissy Martin had 9.

Fredonia will look to get back on the winning track in its rivalry game against Dunkirk on Thursday night in Fredonia at 6 p.m.
