JHS boys improve to 10-1; Clymer stays undefeated

Simeon Leeper scored 7 of his season-high 21 points in the fourth quarter as Jamestown pulled away from Clarence for a 75-56 Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 boys basketball win Saturday afternoon at McElrath Gymnasium.

The Red Raiders (10-1, 9-0) led 32-29 at halftime and by six entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Red Devils, 28-15, over the final eight minutes.

In addition to Leeper’s 7 points, senior Demarri Jones scored all 6 of his points in the period.

“In our fourth quarter, we really started playing much better,” Red Raiders head coach Ben Drake said. “We were creating some turnovers on defense, and getting some open shots and transition baskets on offense.”

Leeper grabbed seven rebounds and handed out six assists; Jones grabbed nine rebounds; and Elijah Rojas had 10 points and seven assists. Trey Drake added 14 points.

“It’s nice to have four guys in double figures,” Coach Drake said.

Clarence (6-4, 5-4) made it difficult on Jones and the Red Raiders’ inside players all game long, which allowed Rojas, Leeper and Drake to combine for eight 3-pointers.

“Clarence is a good team. They have a couple of very good players,” Drake said. “They did a good job of keeping the ball out of the post. We had a tough time throwing it inside, which is something we have had success with this year.”

Jones finally broke through with his 6 points in the fourth quarter.

“Fortunately he played hard all game. He rebounded the ball very well and didn’t get frustrated,” Drake said of Jones. “Defensively, that was their game plan to not give up easy baskets around the bucket. They really packed it in.”

Jamestown will visit Lancaster (4-5, 3-4) on Monday. The Legends lost to Orchard Park, 61-43, on Saturday afternoon.
