SHERMAN PREVAILS

WESTFIELD — Playing shorthanded, the Westfield Wolverines fell to the Sherman Wildcats 51-33.

Already facing a good opponent, the Wolverines played without their second and third leading scorers in Brayden Kneer and Cole Holland, leading to some early struggles, and a 19-2 Sherman lead after the first quarter.

“We struggled,” said Westfield coach Bob North. “With no Cole or Brayden, Sherman is so big they beat us on the glass. In the first half, it felt like if they missed a shot, they continued until they got a rebound and put it back in.”

The game was played more evenly for the following three quarters, but the 17-point early deficit was too much for the Wolverines to overcome. As has been the case all season, Westfield’s Darien Swanson was heavily keyed on, drawing double-teams on most of his touches. He ended the game with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Ethan Weingart had 7 points and nine rebounds.

Gerald Carris led the Wildcats in the win, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Elijah Kioko had 9 points and 10 rebounds. Keith Gormley also scored 9 points, and John Swabik had 6 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
