Panama posts playoff victory over Holland

PANAMA — No. 3 Panama moved to 14-2 on the year with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-10 win over No. 6 Holland in Section VI Class D quarterfinal volleyball action.

That win sets up a semifinal date on the road against No. 2 Chautauqua Lake at 6 p.m. on Thursday, with each team earning one win during the regular season series.

“The girls are excited for another chance,” Panama head coach Tammy Hosier said. “We split in the season and it is always a good volleyball game (with them). It is fun to play. The last time we played them we did lose, but it was great volleyball and we learned from that.”

Jo Bailey had nine kills, two digs and four points, Lilly Odell seven kills, Ashly Harvey six kills, eight digs, nine points and three aces, while Mara Hovey added 12 digs.

The Panthers have had the benefit of strong serving throughout the year, and Maddie Johnson and Mandy Brink continued that on Tuesday.

Johnson chipped in 12 points and 25 assists.

“Maddie is a big-time server and is getting those sets where they need to go,” Hosier said.

“Mandy Brink has kind of been an unsung hero. She is a big reason that other people are getting (those stats).”
