FREWSBURG — 721 days.

That is the number of days it’s been since the last time the Dunkirk Marauders played a high school baseball game.

But you would not know that by the scoreboard Thursday, as the Dunkirk Marauders defeated the Frewsburg Bears, 14-0, in their season opener.

“It all started on the mound tonight,” Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda said after the game.

Javi DeJesus had a great start for Dunkirk. He pitched 4• shutout innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while recording seven strikeouts.

“Getting solid starts like this from our starting pitchers will be key for us the rest of the season,” Jagoda said. “We are solid 1 thought 9 this year and we are hoping we will score some runs.”

The bats did not disappoint, tallying 14 hit, but it was a close game for the first four innings.

Dunkirk took the lead in the top of the first inning with a pair of unearned runs.

The Marauders added to their lead in the third with a double from Nick Zatorski to start off the inning and then Donovan Lockett later drove him in with a double to make it 3-0.

The Marauders added two more runs in the fourth, once again taking advantage of a couple Frewsburg errors and they blew the game wide open with five runs on four hits in the fifth inning and never looked back. Zatorski led the way, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and a team high four RBIs.

Catcher Phil Messina added three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs while Alex Ahlstrom and Donovan Lockett each had two hits. On the mound for Dunkirk, Jack Lanski, Bryson Travis and Nick Zatorski finished the game and preserved the shutout.

Dunkirk’s next games will be a Saturday with a home doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. against Eden and Brocton.

SOFTBALL

COUGARS FALL AT

FREWSBURG — Reagan Chitester made the most of her varsity debut.

The junior right-hander tossed a one-hitter and struck out 14 to lead Frewsburg to an 11-2 softball victory over Cassadaga Valley in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West season opener for both teams Thursday.

“We’re super happy for her,” Bears coach Jon Blanchard said. “She worked hard in the offseason. … We’re pleased with catcher Braelyn Stelmack. They worked great together.”

The lone hit for the Cougars was by Jocelyn Faulkner with one out in the seventh inning.

Leading the way offensively for Frewsburg were Cadence Rodgers with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs; Elise Sposato with two hits and two RBIs; and Peyton Yost with a pair of hits and two runs scored.

SILVER CREEK EDGES DUNKIRK

SILVER CREEK — Laneya Olsen doubled and came around to score following a fielder’s choice, a passed ball and a dropped third strike to lift Silver Creek to a 3-2 eight-inning victory over Dunkirk in a nonleague game.

Kaylee Hutchison and Amber Lockwood combined to record nine strikeouts and scattered 13 hits, including four by Courtney Zatorksi and two by Summer Clark.

Ashley Gotowka suffered the tough-luck loss despite tossing a four-hitter, striking out 12 and issuing two walks.

Silver Creek played stellar defense — it worked its way out of bases-loaded jams in the firet and fifth innings with only one run crossing the plate — and made effective use of the bunt to move runners along.
