Marauders wrap up CCAA Division 1 West title

DUNKIRK — Nick Marsowicz reached on an error, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Nick Zatorski in the bottom of the sixth inning as Dunkirk wrapped up the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West title with a 2-1 win over Olean on Wednesday at Al Stuhlmiller Field.

Zatorski was down in the count 0-2, before lining the base hit to right-center field.

“These kids have worked so hard from January on, putting in all of the time in the gym,” said Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda, who claimed his first division crown in 10 years. “They set some goals for themselves. We’ve had solid senior leadership with Phil Messina and Mike Norton. They’ve taken charge of the team and really led the way, and we had some solid pitching from all our guys.”

The Marauders (15-3, 10-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Alex Ahlstrom led off with a double, went to third on a Norton groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Messina.

The Huskies (8-4, 8-4) tied the game in the fifth inning. Thomas Bates singled with two outs and went to second on a Dominik Henzel single. Jason Brooks then walked to load the bases before Eric Havens was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. Javy DeJesus got out of the jam with a strikeout.

DeJesus threw a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Adam Spencer threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks for Olean.

DeJesus doubled and Scott Korzenski singled for Dunkirk’s other two hits.

Chase Kratts had two hits, including a double, and Brooks also doubled for the Huskies.

“We’ve had four one-run games, and that’s huge,” Jagoda said. “It makes you playoff tough. Hopefully next week we’re successful. These kids have had a goal all year to first win the league and then move on.”

The final putout was made by Messina, the Marauders’ starting catcher since he was an eighth-grader.

“He put it in his back pocket and he gave it to me,” Jagoda said.

SCHRADER SHINES FOR FREDONIA

“It was our Senior Night, so it was good to send our seniors off (that way),” Red Raiders coach Dave Roehmholdt said.

SILVER CREEK — Randolph trailed Silver Creek/Forestville 3-2 after three innings before scoring 12 runs over the final four innings en route to a 14-7 Division 2 East victory.

WARRIORS WIN IN FIVE

SALAMANCA — Sparked by an eight-run first inning, Salamanca rolled to a 15-3 five-inning victory over Cattaraugus-Little Valley in a CCAA Division 1 East game.

The Warriors (9-5, 6-4) took advantage of 11 walks, and that was more than enough for Jaxson Ross, who fanned 10 and gave up two hits to record the win.

Hayden Hoag led the way offensively for Salamanca, collecting all three of his team’s hits.

Nick Savidge and Gavin Baxter both had a hit for Cattaraugus-Little Valley (0-12, 0-6).
