The Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors has voted to officially cancel its 2021 induction banquet that had been postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, the 11 individuals selected to be inductees of the Class of 2021 will now become the Class of 2022 and will be enshrined on Presidents Day, Feb. 22, 2022.

No new inductees will be selected.

The living inductees are Sarah M. (Bogardus) Burnett, Andrew J. Creager, Christina M. Kebort, Michael A. Sirianni, Lewis G. Mack, Marc T. Tramuta and Randall G. Anderson. The deceased honorees are George L. Barone Jr., Harry G. Carlson, Larry E. Rodgers and Richard P. Shearman.

The 2021 CSHOF Legacy Awards will still be presented this year, however. The Legacy Award recipients will be honored at the CSHOF annual members’ picnic at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club.

≤ The Bill Rollinger and Tony LeVoie Legacy Award will be given in honor of two outstanding swim coaches. Rollinger, a 1996 CSHOF inductee, was well-known for his success at Jamestown High School while LeVoie, a 1985 CSHOF inductee, is remembered for his work at the Jamestown Boys’ Club. The Rollinger and LeVoie Award will be given to the outstanding male high school swimmer, Kyle Dean from Jamestown High School.

≤ The Julie (Gawronski) Tickle Legacy Award honors the accomplishments of 2016 CSHOF inductee who excelled at Dunkirk High and Union College in both soccer and softball. The Tickle Award will be presented to the outstanding female multi-sport high school athlete, Sofia Genareo from Southwestern Central School.

The James A. Sharp Legacy Award honors the memory of the former parks and recreation director for the City of Jamestown. The Sharp Award will be presented to an outstanding contributor to the opportunity, development and growth of sports in Chautauqua County, the late Frank Stefanelli from the Jamestown Babe Ruth World Series Committee.

The Ken Martin Legacy Award honors the 1997 CSHOF inductee who is arguably one of the finest baseball and softball players in Chautauqua County history. The Martin Award will be presented to the outstanding high school baseball player, Phil Messina from Dunkirk High School.

The Tom Prechtl Legacy Award honors the former four-sport Fredonia Central star who went on to play basketball at Niagara University and coach in the county. The Prechtl Award will be presented to the outstanding male multi-sport high school athlete, John Swabik from Sherman Central School.

The Grace M. Dolan Legacy Award will be given in honor of the longtime swimming official, Red Cross instructor and CSHOF director. The Dolan Award will be presented to the outstanding female high school swimmer, Madison Kramer from Falconer Central School.

The Jack Keeney Legacy Award honors the 2015 CSHOF inductee who was a beloved teacher, coach and administrator at Panama Central School. The Keeney Award will be given to two outstanding student-athletes at Panama, Ashlyn Harvey and Marra Hovey.

The Anthony “Dony” Deppas Legacy Award honors the memory of the well-known sports enthusiast and player from Jamestown. The Deppas Award will be presented to the outstanding male high school basketball player, Tyler Putney from Fredonia Central School.

The Mel Swanson Legacy Award honors the former basketball coach at Sherman Central who retired with the most victories in Chautauqua County history. The Swanson Award, presented to an outstanding female basketball player will be given to Mackenzie Gratto from Sherman Central School.

The Nelson Turnell Legacy Award will be presented in honor of a member of the CSHOF’s very first inductee class. Turnell was known throughout the area as a first-rate player, an excellent coach and a man who loved tennis. The Turnell Award will be given to the outstanding male high school tennis player, Ryan Wills from Dunkirk High School.

The Ted Olsen and Bill Present Legacy Award will be given in honor of two outstanding athletes from Jamestown High School in the 1940s. Ted Olsen, a 1999 CSHOF inductee was noted for his prowess on the JHS gridiron, while Present a 2006 CSHOF inductee, starred on the hardwood at JHS. The Olsen and Present Award will be given to the outstanding male and female student-athletes at Jamestown. Drew Carlson and Holly Isaacson will be the 2021 recipients.

The Sirianni Family Legacy Award honors CSHOF inductee Fran Sirianni, his wife, Amy, and his three sons, Mike, Jay and Nick. The Siriannis are well-known for their impressive accomplishments in football and track and field, the latter a sport Fran coached at Southwestern Central for nearly 40 years. The Sirianni Award will recognize the outstanding high school track and field athlete in Chautauqua County, Cassidy Allen of Southwestern Central High School.

The Dr. Charles E. Sinatra Legacy Award honors a man who is known nationwide for his remarkable ability to build and restore championship winning antique cars and motorcycles, but who quietly, behind-the scenes, and without seeking attention or thanks, has volunteered and supported sports and a wide variety of other community activities to better the quality of life in Chautauqua County. The 2021 recipient of the Sinatra Award as an unsung hero is Robert “Knobby” Knobloch of Jamestown.

The President’s Legacy Award will be given by Randy Anderson to a member of the CSHOF Board of Directors who has performed outstanding service to the CSHOF. The recipient will be announced at the picnic.

The Cal Cederquist Legacy Award honors the 2013 CSHOF inductee who was a highly successful cross country and track and field coach at Chautauqua Central School and later at Chautauqua Lake Central School. The Cederquist Award honors an outstanding track and field student-athlete at Chautauqua Lake Central. The 2021 recipient is Kira Erickson.

The Stan Marshaus Legacy Award will be given in honor of the 2006 CSHOF inductee who has been a well-known figure in the world of golf in the county, especially with his achievements as pro and/or director of golf at the Chautauqua Golf Club. The Marshaus Award will be given to the top male high school golfer in Chautauqua County, Max Vaughn from Southwestern Central School.

The Women Coaches’ Legacy Award will be given in recognition of the important contributions women make in the coaching circles of Chautauqua County. The 2021 “Palmer” award will be given to the outstanding girls volleyball and softball coach at Panama Central School, Tammy Hosier.

The Chuck Crist Eminence Grise Award is given in honor of one of the finest all-around athletes in Western New York history. A standout basketball player at Penn State, Crist transitioned to defensive back and had a seven year NFL career without playing a down of college football. The Crist Award recognizes a powerful decision maker or adviser who operates behind the scenes or in a nonpublic or unofficial capacity in sports in Chautauqua County. The 2021 recipient is Doug Berlin, formerly of Jamestown and now residing in Clymer.

The Chip and Mary Beth Johnson Legacy Award recognizes the important role that officials play in sports in Chautauqua County. Chip Johnson, a basketball referee and baseball and softball umpire for many years, as well as the CSHOF induction banquet chairman for more than three decades, knows that competent officials ensure fairly played games at all levels of sports. The Johnson Award for 2021 goes to Ray Lindquist of Falconer.

The Lyle Peterson Legacy Award honors the memory of the well-known Jamestown businessman and sports enthusiast who had a great love for ice skating. The Peterson Award is presented to an outstanding contributor(s) to the opportunity, development and growth of ice skating in Chautauqua County. The 2021 honorees are Lenel van den Berg and Kirk Wyse, founders of the Jamestown Skating Academy.
